While 1978 was the threshold for asbestos usage, it did carry over for several years. As indicated by the EPA, asbestos may be found in the following places:
- Attic and wall insulation with vermiculite, a mineral composed of shiny flakes

- Vinyl flooring tiles, the backing on vinyl sheet flooring, and adhesives used to install floor tile
- Roofing and siding shingles made of asbestos cement
- Walls and floors around wood-burning stoves protected by asbestos paper or cement sheets
- Door gaskets on oil and coal furnaces
- Textured ceilings and wall paints
Asbestos testing isn’t always necessary, and there are certain scenarios where it is best to leave undisturbed.
